Natural fibres and textiles have a long history, but only in recent years consumers in Europe, USA, Japan and other countries showed an increasing interest in natural textiles, especially in organic cotton. This trend was recognized and used by several major apparel manufacturers, and as a result the demand for certified organic cotton exceeded the production capacity of major suppliers, such as Turkey.

Similarly to natural/organic body care products and cosmetics, organic textiles are by law not subject to certification. However, certain quality standards are ensured by respected associations and certifiers, among them Control Union, Ecocert and GOTS.
